In a shorter journal entry this week, we watched Shadow of a Doubt. In discussion during class, Alex related to us that Hitchcock considers Shadow of a Doubt his favorite movie. We know how I feel about silent films based on previous entries, but this was more forgettable a movie to me. Beyond the opening scene, I ad a hard to getting drawn into the film. This changed as it entered into the second act, but it was a little slow from the get go for me.
Beyond this, there were some interesting aspects to the movie.
There was a strange relationship between Uncle Charlie and Young Charlie. When Uncle Charlie moves in to live with the family, the two Charlies seem to have a bond. Not that this is not normal that certain family members attach or relate better to others, but at times it seems almost unnatural between the two. This, of course, was well before the young Charlie discovers Uncle Charlie for what he truly was. A murderer.
Secondly, in true, almost demented Hitchcock fashion, Uncle Charlie goes to great lengths to keep young Charlie from letting his little secret out. He keeps a close eye on her and several times, tries to kill her. This ultimately results in a scuffle that leads to his own death as he falls out of a train. Thats a pretty sick outcome where a much older, male family member would go to such lengths as to kill an innocent little girl. Just strange. But, fits the Hitchcock bill perfectly.
